Taking the Bus to School

If you know Max and me even a little you are probably aware that we are not morning people. The notion of waking up before 9am is quite foreign to us. I should say was. Classes start at 7:30 in the morning and we have to wake up early enough to have breakfast with our host families. After breakfast our mother gives us our thermos (more like an insulated lunch box that looks like a giant thermos) with lunch and we take our back packs to the school bus stop to go to school. We wait, sometimes accompanied by host mothers that like to walk their volunteers to the stop, for the yellow school bus to take us to school every morning.

I thought elementary school days had been long over.

Seriously, though, Honduras is apparently where the U.S. sends all of its old, decommissioned school busses, because the busses here appear to actually be old school busses of the kind that many of us took to school when we were kids. They’re not just used for picking up students here – they’re also used as the busses that take people from town to town.
On our first day taking the bus I headed back to school equipped with my backpack, thermos, allergies and swollen eye.
